P-Syketalo - Warm and caring atmosphere!

REHABILITATION

For medical and psychiatric appointments, the residents are either taken to Laukaa Medical Centre or to a mental health centre. In individual cases, they can be taken to a service assigned by the resident’s own local authority.

The doctors are in charge of the residents’ medical needs.

The staff at P-Syketalo administer the residents’ prescriptions and report to the doctors regarding the administration and effectiveness of the medicines. P-Syketalo admits the guests to become resident after a trial period.

The residents are offered individualised activities that support their daily life:
- Art and handicraft (printing, sewing and woodwork)
- Music (there is a house band with lots of different kinds of instruments)
- Exercise (there is a small gym in the house, and in winter time ski tracks)
- Gardening
- Animal care (we have pig, donkeys, sheep, ducks, chickens, and a rooster in the outhouse)
- Domestic tasks (baking, kitchen shifts)

Some tuition is sourced externally. The voluntary tasks available at P-Syketalo offer residents stimuli. They can be provided in-house or can be externally sourced (maintained by associations or local authorities, such as museums and libraries). They can also take place outside of P-Syketalo in the form of visits. The associations are well-known and safe; they include the local Lions, Rotary, Finnish Red Cross, 4H association (equivalent to Young Farmers), Martat (equivalent to Women’s Institute) and adult education establishments.

Residents can therefore participate in voluntary activities indoors. They can get involved in activities with a mentor, such as cooking, supervised communication on the Internet, writing, playing games (cards, chess, pool, table football, general knowledge quizzes etc) or physical activities that suit everyone, including non-strenuous exercise to maintain muscle tone, mobility and stretching exercises, basic keep fit exercises, musical fitness activities and dancing.

Other planned leisure activities include karaoke, theatre productions and monthly themed events.

All activities take into consideration the residents’ personal skills and knowledge, which are supported through music, reading, cinema evenings and exercise.

The residents are actively supported in their musical pursuits. The programme may include for instance classical music, group singing or band practice.

The residents may participate in a theatre group if they so wish. The group improvises, tries different means of expression, plans and can rehearse performances for the open air theatre in summer months.

The outbuilding offers a place for wood and metal work.

The land surrounding P-Syketalo offers good opportunities for outdoor pursuits. In the yard residents can try their hand at gardening (planting, cutting and pruning) and at looking after the animals. The residents routinely feed the pig, donkeys, lambs ducks, and chickens and generally participate in their care.

Relatives can come and visit the residents at a mutually convenient time. In the spring, the house organises a spring fest, and the handicraft groups assemble an exhibition of their work. In the summer various festivals and parties are organised, and weekends are dedicated for picnicks and daytrips. In the autumn the residents are taken on longer holidays.

Winter activities include karaoke evenings and performances from visiting professional artists.

P-Syketalo has a vehicle which is used for shopping trips in small groups. Other types of visits are also organised. These visits are considered leisure activities and they are planned in good time.
